Organic Cooking

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:52 am

For anyone interested in organic meals there are some excellent websites which are now offering information, many with an organic cook book available.

You’ll find some of these sites can give very detailed information. Sometimes, though, too much information can mire you in detail. In those cases what you really need is straightfoward information to steer you through the confusion, so it’s worth looking for sites that present the information in a clear, uncluttered fashion.

Because most people who are interested in organic recipes are likely to be considering their health, primarily, it is just common sense to find information sources that suggest healthy meals. Just because a meal is made with organic produce doesn’t mean it’s a healthy meal, you can eat far too many red meats and potatoes just as easily with organic produce as you can with the regular kind.

So looking for a suitably wide range of modern organic recipes is a not a bad idea, just remember to allow an occasional treat sometimes, too! They do say that variety is importantand the one thing you don’t want to do is boring yourself off otherwise healthy diet.

Keep in mind is that really good quality organic produce is very seasonal. You just don’t get certain foods fresh all year round - nor should you. So it’s wise to select recipes according to the time of year when you’re eating. That in itself will give you variety in your diet, which is beneficial.

For those of your who are really serious about healthy eating then it pays to get a good quality cookbook to learn a few of the wonderful recipes available when you have food that actually tastes of something. Your health and your body will thank you for it.

This site does not offer medical guidance, or advice and all information is presented for entertainment purposes. You should always consult your doctor before making any changes to your diet

Demolition

Introduction

Taking down old buildings and replacing them with new is a process that has been going on for thousands of years. The destruction of buildings might have occurred during battles or attacks on villages; or due to natural disturbances such as earthquakes or volcanic activity. The resultant ruins would need to be removed and rebuilt. So the idea of demolition would have come about where a population wished to re-inhabit a specific area or site. (One famous example is the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which was deliberately destroyed by the Assyrians around 586 BCE. After 50 years of occupation the Jews returned to Jerusalem and began the re-construction of the second temple which took seventy years to complete.)

However the actual word to demolish only came into being in 1570, and was used from then on to mean the deliberate taking down or destroying of a building or structure.

Preserving the past - preparing the future.

In a country like Britain with very dense populations per square mile, there is a limited amount of land available for building. The land between built up areas of the villages and towns is known as Green Belt and is protected from development to preserve the agricultural and natural heritage which is vital to the economy of the country.

The outcome of this policy is that there is a constant shortage of land for housing and industry, so the developers have to be more creative when providing structures for the population. One of the ways of doing this is to find places where the buildings are no longer commercially viable or have been abandoned, and re-use the area for different purposes. These areas are known as brownfield, or greyfield sites. In some cities, particularly Leeds and Manchester, the old warehouses or factories have been converted into apartments, retaining the original shell and reconfiguring the internal dimensions into desirable living accommodation.

Brownfield sites are disused industrial and commercial facilities where the land may be contaminated with hazardous waste or pollution. They are potentially valuable for significant redevelopment once they have been cleaned up. Greyfield sites are urban properties that have been underutilised or abandoned, but do not have the environmental issues of brownfield sites. They were termed greyfield sites because of large areas of asphalt that covered the land. These sites are valuable because they already have the infrastructure such as water, sewage, electricity and gas in place and do not need remedial work to exploit the site.

When a structure is to be removed there are different ways of approaching the task. The size and construction of the building, the new use of the site and whether there are valuable elements suitable for re-use, will all determine how it is to be demolished.

Traditional Demolition

Traditionally, once all the services were disconnected, the machinery and men would go in and just knock down the walls which caused the roof to collapse and then drag all the debris away. Any concrete hard standing would be broken up ready for removal. The old style of excavation would involve the clearing of rubbish to landfill sites. However modern demolition practices are very controlled and are subject to strict planning, safety and monitoring regulations.

Small structures such as two or three storey houses can be dismantled quite easily with hydraulic excavators and bulldozers using an undermining process. The walls are undermined at the base, in order to topple the structure; at the same time the manner and direction of the fall is controlled. Clean-up and safety issues are also taken into account when choosing how the building will be undermined and demolished.

Larger buildings such as tower blocks and chimneys require more specialist techniques, and are outlined below.

Deconstruction

A new approach to demolishing buildings is deconstruction - a green approach. The aim is to diminish the amount of waste going to landfill sites by carefully preserving valuable materials for reuse. The work may be a painstaking task of dismantling by hand - brick by brick - or beam by beam. The reclaimed materials are then recycled or re-used for future buildings. The results of deconstruction can save in excess of 90% waste from going to a landfill site. When the farmer opposite to my house sold his farm yard with barns for housing, the builder demolished the barns, cleaned up the bricks and reused them for the perimeter wall of the farmhouse. At the time I was looking for some rubble as a base for a path and the builder let me take several barrow loads off his pile.

Recycling

Historically when old buildings were ruined from disuse or war damage the local people would gradually remove the stone and use it to build their new structures such as houses or barns. Hadrian’s wall between Carlisle and Newcastle has mostly disappeared because after the Romans left, the local population made off with the beautifully dressed stone the Roman craftsmen had used in the building of the wall. So even in those days people understood the value of recycling because it was much cheaper than having to quarry and dress the stone themselves.

At one time the rubble resulting from a demolished building would be taken to a landfill site for disposal. Now however concrete can be rapidly broken up with the latest machine called a guillotine and the resultant rubble can be crushed and used as sub-base material for the foundation of the new building which is to replace the old, or sent to other construction sites. These days this crushed rubble is called 6f2 crushed stone or 6f2 crushed material.

Modern machinery and techniques allows the demolition companies to efficiently segregate waste types on or off-site. Wherever possible construction materials are recycled and re-used in the new structure. Recycling of waste contributes to a substantial savings in project costs and is good for the environment.

When we renovated our bungalow 20 years ago the builder, who was a bell ringer, found an old beam from a bell tower that was being renovated, and after carefully treating it, installed it in the kitchen. It gave the room some badly needed character and has never needed any further treatment.

Copper pipes, wiring, roof tiles or slates, floor tiles and doors, and wood panelling are some of the valuable artifacts that are saved for recycling and re-use. There are specialist yards in many towns where reclaimed old or antique artefacts are available for purchase.

Tall Buildings

If building demolition projects involve really high buildings then very skilled demolition contractors are required. In some cases a wrecking ball on a crane may be used to demolish the top part of a tall building until it is down to a manageable height. However this process is rarely used by professional demolition companies today due to the uncontrollable factor of the swinging ball and the proximity of other buildings.

Other methods of demolition of tall buildings are by implosion using explosives, controlled collapse and piecemeal. Also ‘High Reach’ demolition excavators are used where explosives are not suitable. Once the building is down to a more manageable height demolition continues in the usual way.

The steeplejack Fred Dibnah became famous in the late 1970’s for his work on demolishing tall chimneys without the need for explosives. He would cut an ingress at the base of the chimney, use wooden props to support the brickwork and then burn the props so that the chimney toppled hopefully in the right direction.

The tallest building to be lawfully demolished was the Singer Building of New York in 1967/8. More recently the collapse of the World Trade Centre after the 9/11 attack in 2001 illustrates the terrible devastation that could occur if the demolition is not controlled and very carefully contained.

In the demolishing of tall buildings and large structures water hoses and spray equipment is used to control the dust and would is termed a wet demolition.

Explosions

What comes to mind for many people when they think about demolition would be the dramatic collapse of a tall building using explosives. However it is usually the process of implosion, using explosives, that brings down a tall building so that it does as little damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Implosion is essential for dense urban areas and is very fast, the collapse taking only seconds, with the building crashing inwards into its own footprint.

Using explosives is specialist work and is a very skilled process and getting it wrong can be catastrophic. If an implosion is not prepared correctly the danger may be damage to neighbouring structures or even killing onlookers from flying debris. Even more dangerous is a partial collapse of a building where the remaining structure is unstable and there are still primed explosives that failed to go off. Workers are in great danger if or when continuing the demolition.

Other risks of working with explosives occurs when the atmospheric pressure from low cloud above the implosion site will cause the shockwave to spread outwards instead of upwards. The wave of energy and sound created will break windows and cause other damage to the surrounding buildings.

Because of the dangers of working with explosives, implosion will only be used when other methods are too costly or impractical.

Health and Safety

Demolition of any building is highly dangerous and is a much more complicated and technical process than most people would realise. Experienced and skilled operators are essential to ensure safety for both workers and public alike. The stability of any structure is reliant on the interdependence of its component parts, so an incorrect sequence of dismantling could result in an unplanned collapse.

Health and safety is paramount in demolition work so personnel working in the industry have to be appropriately trained. It is advisable for operatives to have gained a Certificate of Competence in Demolition to ensure they have the necessary skills and safety awareness. All demolition work is regulated by the Construction, Design and Management Regulations.

Sequence of Demolition

There has to be a sequence of actions before any demolition can take place. Each area council will have their own specific list for planning approval, but a typical order would be as follows:-

  • Provision of Information
The demolition company must provide information about the construction to be demolished, its previous use and the appropriate demolition method to be applied including disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Survey of Demolition
Identification of any structural problems as well as risks associated with hazardous or flammable substances , asbestos is one such substance which, if present, legislates that an asbestos survey must be undertaken on the project.Where petrol has been stored, in a disused garage for example, precautions need to be taken to prevent a fire hazard.
  • Preferred and Safe Method of Work
A reputable company involved in demolition will be able to select the appropriate method of disposal. Planning and outlining the dismantling process is necessary for assiduous monitoring. A detailed statement outlining the safety process needs to be agreed by all parties involved before any demolition can take place.
  • Preparation and Planning
There is a lot of preparation to be done before starting work on demolishing the building itself. Issues such as asbestos abatement, disconnecting utilities, rodent baiting, dealing with hazardous substances and making safe any electric, gas or other services have to be resolved.
  • Protection of the Public
Where demolition is carried out in heavily populated areas the protection of the public is paramount. Safety cannot be compromised. Temporary services may need to be arranged, health hazards assessed and people affected will need to be informed.

Conclusion

The word ‘demolish’ is interpreted as the deliberate and controlled collapse of a structure. Demolition work is a very dangerous business and demolishing any building is a complex and skilled process. The aim in demolition is to remove an unwanted building as safely and quickly as possible, recycle or re-use most of the old material, and clear the site ready for the subsequent use.

In the centre of Nottingham over the last few years there has been a major reconstruction of what was an old car park into a brand new shopping development. While this was going on the public were only really aware of the boarding around the area, a change in traffic direction and maybe some big lorries going in and out of the site.

So the next time you see houses being demolished to make way for the new, give a thought to the company involved who’s team are daily working in a dangerous environment, adhering to all of the regulations and carefully and meticulously carrying out the project to bring us the modern conveniences we have come to expect and clearing the way for the future.

Has Scotland moved to North Carolina USA?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:01 pm

Would it surprise you to discover that there are more people living in the state of North Carolina of Scottish Descent than Scots in Scotland.

After the highland clearances where the major landowners evicted several thousand crofters (small-holders) large number of Scots made their way by boat to the new American settlements. One party of nearly 2,000 Scots from the Isle of Jura and surrounding area settled in North Carolina. You could read more about that on the Laird of Jura website.

This area still has close connections with the home country of Scotland and many would say that the town of Laurinburg, North Carolina for example is as Scottish as any town on the Scottish Mainland. Did you know that :

The town of Laurinberg is situated in the state county of “Scotland”.

The town high school is of course called “Scotland High School”. And to go with that the School song is the national anthem of Scotland “Scotland the Brave”.

Apart from their traditional marching band who wear the Royal Stewart Tartan as a uniform they also have a prize winning Scottish bagpipe team.

The school Football, Baseball and the Basketball teams are called the “Fighting Scots”. (Did you know that the game of Basketball was invented by a Scottish American who was charged with finding some sports activity for youths to play indoors during bad weather? Its true!)

As you may know St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland and the name of their Presbyterian College is of course St Andrews. Just inside the grounds of the college you will be confronted by a huge bronze statute of a Highland Warrior proudly holding a Claymore (a huge 2 handed sword favoured by Braveheart).

The College is also home to the Scottish Heritage Centre.

Feeling hungry? Visit the local fast food company called Scottish Foods using a Scottish bagpiper as its main logo.

“Scotland Crossing” is the main shopping center for people in the town. The centre uses a red lion on a yellow background as its main central feature. Officially this is a breach of Scottish law as only the Scottish monarch can use this Rampart Lion but we do normally turn a blind eye to it even here in the real Scotland.

The Square Dance Club is the Scottish Twirlers.

Remember the large two handed sword on the highlander statue at the college well there is also a local soccer team called the Scottish Claymores.

Lastly but not least there are numerous streets and roads named after places such as Oban, Skye, and Argyllshire the origins of the first settlers before they left Scotland.

Do you know any other place which is more Scottish than this town in North Carolina?

Did you know you could increase your Scottish ness by becoming a landowner on the isle of Jura and become a Scottish Royal? It makes an unique gift idea for anyone with or without an existing Scottish connection.

Obama’s New Economic Stimulus Package for 2009, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:24 am

Our new president elect is hoping to put a new stimulus package together shortly after he takes office. His team is already working on a new economic plan. There are hoping to send out another round of stimulus checks to Americans as well as many tax breaks, and many other changes that will help those on unemployment. It will also provide some assistance to those looking to cash in on some of their retirement savings.

Stimulus Checks

Barack Obama has proposed a new tax credit. This new credit could allow for up to $1,000.00 per family to help ease income taxes. This will kind of work like a stimulus check but will need to be facilitated through employers. The employer will be required to not charge income tax for the first $8,100.00 of an employeeʼs wages.

Retirement Accounts

Another section of the economic plan would include a break for individuals looking to cash out some of their retirement savings early. Obama is hoping to allow those having financial troubles be allowed to access some of their retirement savings without penalty. The plan would allow for up to a $10,000.00 withdraw without penalty at any time during 2009. These withdrawals would still be subject to state and federal taxes.

Income Tax

We could see a large tax rate decrease for the middle class. This would be able to happen with the proposed tax increase for those who earn more than$250,000.00 annually. The new tax rate for those with high income could be as much 36%-39%.

TurboTax Online has the answers to all of your stimulus payment questions.

Physician Job Search FAQ

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:14 am

Q: Should I hire a lawyer to review my physician employment contract?

A: In general, yes. We are not lawyers and do not give legal advice. We have reviewed many contracts and can provide you with feedback as to what we have seen as standard. The choice of a lawyer is critical. Find someone well versed in medical contract law, as well as the state’s laws in which you will practice. Try to find an attorney recommended by someone else. Also, make sure the attorney has enough time to review the contract in a timely manner. Negotiations could be hampered by a slowed response time.

Q: If I am a resident, when should I decide upon accepting a position?

A: As a general rule, the earlier the better. The more time you have to work on license applications, hospital privileges, finding a new home and moving arrangements, the less stress you’ll encounter. Many hospitals recruit for summer positions in the fall and early winter. Don’t think all of the “good” physician jobs are taken by the end of winter. We assist physicians throughout the year because contract expirations occur throughout the year. Don’t worry. Have confidence that the right position will be available. Call us, we are here to help!

Q: Who handles negotiations, me or my recruiter?

A: Whenever possible, your recruiter should handle negotiations for physician practice opportunities. Having a liaison reduces the potential for heated arguments between two parties. Keep in mind, professional recruiters regularly perform this task.

Let’s face it: getting older sucks. No one likes getting old, but unluckily there isn’t much we can do about it. We can do our best to live a nutritious and balanced life style to reduce the visual aspect of age, but that only goes too far. Fortunately there has been a recent discovery called resveratrol which is supposed to make you appear younger or at least halt the aging process. It was on Oprah and everyone seems to be lecturing about it, but it’s tough to say how competent it actually is in humankind. One brand of this stuff is called resv glow discount which is a relatively new blend. They claim to be the hottest but so does everyone else.

Another kind of resveratrol supplementation that can be purchased on-line is certified resv and can be bought as a free trial bottle. This is supposed to be more powerful than others and is quite hot now. It has a fine looking internet site and looks to be sound.

The last kind of resv supplement right now is called vital rezv discount and looks to be rather reliable. It’s hard to say which one is the best but they all seem to be rather respectable.

It’s challenging to recognize what merchandises for sale online are trustworthy or not. There are plenty of defrauds online, as it looks anyone is happy to scam someone else if it’s going to make them a dollar. After one eventually determines what is authentic or not, then there’s the chore of figuring out whether the product for sale will actually work or not. This is specially frequent in the weight loss niche and anti aging niche. One such product is called buy resverxp and can be bought through their internet site. Although it is tough to say that the ware works or does not work, the site is decidedly legal, and can be believed when buying supplements through them.

Speaking of anti aging products, there is another really hot product called buy youth resv ultra which looks extremely good. Who wouldn’t want to look hotter just from taking a pill? With a free trial you can’t go bad.

Acai berries are still extremely viable in this economy, because America has so many overweight people looking to lose some pounds. The freshest hottest acai product is called premium acai burn reviews and has a long salespage that promises easily losing weight in no time.

Finding Inexpensive Bankruptcy Lawyers in Your Area

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:56 am

Are you looking for a solution to eliminate your debt? There is hope! Finding cheap bankruptcy lawyers near your location is easier than you think. You’ll be able to quickly come up with a good list of prospects that are near your area if you use an online legal directory. Here’s one such resource that is free to use.

Thomson Reuters’ FindLaw located in lawyers[dot]findlaw[dot]com

This is the online version of West Legal Directory of attorneys. Use the “Search for a Lawyer” to search their online database. Under the “Legal Issue” search field type in ‘bankruptcy’. Type in your city under the “Location” box. Remember to include your state and zip code. It will make the search output more accurate. Press “Enter” or click the “Find lawyers” button. You will then be shown with a list of bankruptcy attorneys. If the list is too little, then you can widen your search criteria by removing the city on the search form. You can also use the adjacent cities close to you. Take note of the entries that have “offers free consultation” mark. They are the lawyers that you should prioritize on your list.

There’s a Shortcut Way of Getting This Done

Let’s assume for a minute you were able to find 10-20 prospects using the above resource. You then phone each one on your list. Assuming you are able to explain your money problems to one attorney in 30 minutes, it will take you 300 minutes or five hours for 10 lawyers and 10 hours if you have 20 on your list! Can you imagine yourself blabbing out for 10 straight hours.

Don’t you think it’s too wearisome to do it that way? What if I tell you there is a better method? The TRUE SECRET in getting hold of low-fee bankruptcy lawyers is to use legal networks. In which you fill out a single online form and your case is forwarded to each member on the network. Those who are interested to handle your case will reply to you or even call you. You are now in a better position to negotiate the legal fees before you actually retain the lawyer.

Visit this web site to learn how to find cheap bankruptcy lawyers using professional bankruptcy networks that handle personal bankruptcy cases. Find the online form and fill it out. That’s it… just wait for them to call you. The best part here is that you have NO OBLIGATION to hire for receiving a f-r-e-e case evaluation.

Lincoln Town Car Suspension Kits - 2003 Lincoln Town Car Explained

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:20 am

In the 6,000 miles I have there has not been a single adjustment needed, not problem to be fixed. I love the car very much. It’s the Special Mid-Year model of Towncar Suspension, the “Limited Edition”in that Silver-Green Fire mist color. 1,000s of compliments on the color! Car needs 70 horsepower more, otherwise near perfect.
Love the power closing trunk- toy. Love the moonroof and the in the trunk out of the way CD Changer with the single slot in dash CD. Sadly, for ‘05 they dumped that (along with Autolamp system & Rainsense wipers (I mean WHAT are they thinking? These are standard on a Toyota Avalon & not available on a ‘05 TC at any price?) I find the driver’s door very heavy and it not easy to open.

At a glance, the next-generation Lincoln Towncar Sespension Parts look like a close relative to its predecessor, which was marketed from 1998 to 2002. The 2003 version is noticeably more formal in appearance and features a completely different grille and taillights — enough to give this rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan a different personality.

The basic platform and profile haven’t changed significantly, but the frame and front Towncar Suspension are new. Steering and handling improvements lead the technical revisions. A new dashboard combines traditional and modern elements. Lincoln claims that the cabin is quieter and more refined.

Reductions in the levels of noise, vibration and harshness stem from such efforts as the modification of the space between cylinder heads. Five Town Car versions are on sale: the regular-wheelbase Cartier, Signature and Executive series, and the posh long-wheelbase Cartier L and Executive L models. Many of the latter go to limousine companies.

What is an HSA?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:49 am

Health insurance is something everyone needs, especially if they have a family. Sadly, many people don’t have adequate medical insurance in cases of serious illness. Even with health insurance, it can cost thousands to properly care for you and your family. If this is the case, you might consider health savings accounts. But, just what is a Health Savings Account?

A health savings account is a way to help pay for current medical bills, as well as save for any future medical emergencies, and are tax free. They are set up to be used along with your current health insurance savings plans, as long as you have a “high deductible” policy. An individual must have a minimum deductible of $1100, or $2200 for families.  And unlike a PPO, it is a true family deductible.  No two-member maximum which can become really expensive if two-members come close but don’t hit the deductible.

For a family policy up to $5,950 can be contributed and for a single policy up to $3000 in 2009 . The best part about a health savings account is that you get to decide how to spend the money and can even invest it in order to help it grow. Also, if you carry a normal low deductible policy, but drop that and replace it with a high deductible policy, your maximum contribution will be pro rated to however many months are remaining in that year.

Whether you’re living alone, or are the head of a family, medical insurance is a must. Now, there is help in making sure that you can cover any medical bills that may arrive. You can also answer the question, “What Is A Health Savings Account”?
